One Seam Scarf Tutorial

Fabric Mousepad

Items Needed:

Mod podge

Sponge brush or bristle brush

Base (Thin board, silicon mat, or thin flat surface)

Fabulous Fabric

Spray Adhesive

Step 1: Cut base and fabric to the same desired size and use your spray adhesive to bind the two together.
Step 2: Layer a thin coat of mod podge evenly across the top of your fabric. Let dry (15-20 minutes) and repeat.
That's it. So simple. I like to show you great projects that involve very little effort. You may now reward yourself for completing a project!

DIY Ottoman From Scratch

This was my first attempt at building an ottoman from scratch. I am so proud of how it turned out. Since I was making it up on the spot I don't have great narrative instructions but next time I will detail out the step-by-step. I did take photos of the process that visually explains what I did.

NBC's Up All Night Decor Inspiration

I am inspired by what NBC's Up All Night set designer, Peter Gurski, created for the new popular show. His mix of modern colors, acclectic furniture pieces, and unique fabrics showcase how modern style can be comfortable and stylish. I hate the stereotype that modern homes are stark white with white leather couches. From watching the show I can see some pieces from West Elm, IKEA, Crate and Barrel and 2modern. The show is also hilarious but the design alone makes it worth watching.

How to Make Chalk Board Paint

I have looked into purchasing chalkboard paint and found it’s over $40 a gallon. My recipe is the exact same thing and can be used with leftover paint saving you a lot of money.
Ingredients:

1 cup paint

2 tablespoons white non-sanded grout (1 can is $2)

Mix together until the consistency is equal to yogurt. The grout thickens the paint and will slightly dilute the color. 1 cup of paint will go a long way. The paint will only last about 12 hours, after it sits for a day it will become too thick to use. To remove chalk use a damp paper towel and don’t place in the dishwasher, you must hand wash.

I used my paint to create a cheese serving tray, wine glasses and beer steins. I also have included some of the best chalk board paint uses.

Easy Kitchen Towel Table Runner

I recently purchased several kitchen towels from Target for $2.99 each. After processing the thousand of options, I decided to make a table runner to match my dining room wedding frame. It's doesn't get much simpler.

Directions: Using your seam ripper take off the short end seam on each towel. Match the design and pin in place. Sew together and you are done. Less than 10 minutes!

DIY Dog Feeder Tutorial by Design Sponge

When it's too cold to take your dog for a jog, make a crate for your mate. I know that I am too cheesy, but Design Sponge has a great tutorial on how to crate this one-of-a-kind piece.

What You’ll Need:

-Wooden crate (sanded well to prevent splinters)
-Stainless steel food bowls (Amazon.com and Pet Food stores have affordable options)
-Jig saw
-Drill with large wood drill bit
-Wood sealer

Directions:

1. You will need two dog bowls with a lip (one for water, one for food). The lip will keep the bowls resting in the top of the crate. I used 2-quart stainless steel bowls that I got at my local chain pet store.

2. Measure your dog bowls to determine how much surface area you need to hold them. Allow an extra two inches on each side of the bowls and two inches between the bowls (total of an additional 6 inches in length and 4 inches in depth). If you don’t leave enough room around the bowls, the integrity of the box may fail the first time your dog accidentally sits on it.

3. Scour your local antique shops for a wooden crate that suits your style. It needs a top, obviously, but having a bottom is optional. Our crate is 26 inches by 13 inches and 9 inches tall.

4. We leave ours unpainted, but I recommend protecting the wood with a clear sealer. Auggie is a slobbery dog, and protecting the wood against water damage will keep it looking good.

5. Measure the inside diameter of the bowls and make paper templates. Lay the templates on your crate until the layout is symmetrical. Trace the templates onto your crate top.

6. Use a wood drill to make a hole inside the area that will hold the bowls. This hole will be a starter place for the jig saw blade.

7. Use a jig saw to cut out the holes. I once used a handsaw to do this, and it took a couple hours. But if that’s all you have, it will work. Use what grandpa calls elbow grease. Once the holes are cut sand the crate and holes again to prevent any splinters for your pet.

8. I also put little protective feet on the bottom to keep the crate from scratching the wood floors. You can pick these up at your local hardware store.

9. If your box comes with a lid you can easily add hinges from your local hardware store to create a unit that acts as storage as well as a feeder.

10. Place your bowls in the feeder, fill with food and let your pets enjo

Dog Door Scratch Repair

Repairing awful looking door scratches is easier than you might think. After many hours of wasted research I realized I had a simple solution at my figertips. I found some cherry oak wood stain in my basement that worked perfectly with no sanding involved in the process. The smell was very strong and it took about 24 hours to dry but I love that it was an easy fix.

How To Paint Your Laminate Counters

I am not against having laminate counters. I do, however, dislike when they pretend to look like real stone. My bathroom vanity was too masculine for me so I decided to paint my counters. I looked up various ways to do this and this is how it worked for me.
First, start with a clean dry surface.

Sand the counter by hand or with an electric sander until it feels slightly rough. When I did this it didn't look different but I could feel the texture changing.

Next, tape the edges and cover fully with primer. I used two coats of all-purpose primer. You could also use spray can primer.

Then, roll on your desired paint color. I did three coats for a very even finish but two coats would have covered just fine. The very final step (I didn't photograph) is to spray on several layers of polyurethane. This will smell very bad. I used a fan to help circulate the air.

2011 Home Lessons

Now that we have been in our home for more than a year, I feel like we have grown as homeowners. For us, owning a home has presented different challenges than when we owned a Downtown Condo. Here are my top ten lessons:

1. Using the fireplace will not burn the house down. Yes, I admit that I was scared to use it. All it takes is an annual chimney sweep for around $30 and keeping a fire extinguisher on hand and you too can stay warm all winter.

2. Utility bills in an older home are EXPENSIVE! Ugly plastic on the windows and four months of stretch pants are worth saving hundreds.

3. Gray paint looks very different on the walls than it does on the paint sample. We painted our living room four times. We have sampled over 25 grays.

4. Online shopping saves money and time. It's not worth driving all over town looking for curtains. Online shopping has thousands more options and easy returns.

5. Home improvement projects take longer than anticipated. We are still working on projects that I thought we would have done in the first six months.

6. Home warranties are worth every penny in an older home. For $55 we now have a new double oven and refrigerator.

7. Reuse, recycle and repurpose items around your home to save money and make things personal.

8. Gardening and weeds do not agree with me. I tried to find my green thumb but it just doesn't exist. I think the weeds like to play tricks on my by multiplying before I turn around.

9. Dogs love a big home and a backyard. I thought Mika would always be an indoor dog but she can bird watch and chase squirrels for hours.

10. Be patient and find the house that calls to you and feels like home.

Easy Eco Holiday Gift Wrapping Bag

This year I wanted to wrap everyone's presents in something they could use again and again. I created an easy canvas gift bag that can be used for shoes when people travel. It really could be used for anything. So far my family is using them for toys, groceries, toiletries and dirty laundry.

Items Needed:

Canvas or muslin fabric (I purchased at Wal-mart for $1.97 a yard)

Drawstring (I purchased from Home Depot for $3.50)

Fabric Markers

Sewing Machine

First, I cut my fabric 28" by 17" to accommodate a men's size 11 shoes. Next, I ironed a 1/2 inch seam on the long side of the fabric which will become your drawstring seam. Then design your bags as you wish. I used fabric markers and stencils because I always need a template. After they are designed and dry, fold the outside (where you designed) into each side to create a 14" by 17" bag and stitch the two raw edges. Flip to the correct side and insert your drawstring with a safety pin.

Ta-da! You're done.

You can make this any size to fit your gift. Next year, I may make smaller bags for cosmetic bags for traveling.

Custom Image Canvas

Items needed:
Spray Paint
Large painted or printed canvas
Printer
Scissors
Tape

Estimated time: 1 hour

1. Find desired canvas. I found mine at Home Goods on clearance for $35 because it needed a staple in the back frame and was loose. Easy fix and saved me 50%.
2. Take photo or image and enlarge on your computer. I used Microscoft Publisher and changed the page set-up to be the size of my canvas. Then I enlarged the photos and printed the document.
3. Using the printed image place together and cut off the excess edges of your image and tape secure together and onto your canvas with double stick tape.
4. Last, spray paint your canvas. Let dry and then remove the image onto of the canvas.

Thrift Store Shopping Remorse

I think I am the opposite of most; I regret when I don't purchase something. When I shop I take photos of things I like. A lot of times when I decide to purchase them they are no longer there and I have remorse of not purchasing the item. It's hard for me to pick up a wing back chair for $50 (I know it's a good deal!) when I don't have the space in my home and I'm already working on 15+ projects. Here is just a very small sample of projects I wish I had purchased. This also served as proof to my husband that I don't buy everything I find. I'm picky!

Easy DIY Infinity Scarf

Pinterest is officially the most inspiring website ever created and I love getting friends addicted to the madness. A couple of pins inspired Stephanie and I to spend the day making infinity scarves. So simple!

All you need is 1.5-2 yards of fabric (roughly 36 inches by 70 inches) but we experimented with bigger and smaller pieces to see what we liked best. After experimenting, we decided we liked the bigger the better! Cut your fabric to the desired size and sew (right sides facing eachother) the long width of your fabric. Next, fold inside out (right fabric facing outside) and sew together the short ends and cut excess fabric close to seam. Ta-Da! It's that easy. The hardest part is picking out the next fabric.

Unfinished Business

I wish I could honestly say that I finish every project I start. But..... I don't. I know this is common. You set out to do a project and priorities change, you don't have the supplies you need or you lose interest. My basement has several very sad unfinished projects. I thought by including them in my blog it would show that I'm not perfect and maybe slightly inspire me to finish them.

I have put at least 5 hours of labor into this chair. I removed nailheads and fabric, sanded, primed. painted, reupholstered and just have nailheads left. I cannot find sturdy, high quality nailheads that will help me complete my project.

This chair is a fantastic find and has a lot of potential. I didn't notice it was missing a support piece until I was priming the chair. Until I get that fixed it will be in my sad basement.

I think I may have offically given up on this chair. I don't like it anymore. I struggled for a good amount of time on doing the fabric for the back support and I think I gave in and tossed the back support out. This way be my paint testing chair in the future or be recycled by someone else.

Ten Minute iPad Case Tutorial

Basic iPad Case

Materials Needed:
Scrap fabric (about 1/6 yard)
1/6 Yard Felt
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Measuring Tape

Estimated time: 10 minutes

Measure and cut your fabric and felt into two pieces 8.5 inches by 10 inches. You should have two pieces of fabric and two pieces of felt. Next, pin one piece of felt to one piece of fabric and sew the narrow ends together, this is creating the top seam. Third, sew together the two pieces on the three ends that do not include the top seam, creating a pocket. When sewing pieces together make sure the outside fabric called the ‘right’ sides are facing each other and the felt should be out the outside. This will create the look you want when you flip inside out. This allows your seams and felt to be inside for a clean and professional look. Lastly, flip inside out and take a pin to pitch your inside corners for a crisp look. You are done!

Zippers are on thing I have always been intimidated to try. Earlier this month when my mother came to visit we discovered that she also had never attempted a zipper. With the help of her online video, my mother and I completed the pillow in under 30 minutes. It's actually not hard! I scored some vintage zippers for $.25 and used leftover fabric from my Ms. Pac Man chairs and made a small pillow for my office chair.

I highly recommend her book, Sewing In A Straight Line. The projects are well designed, modern and make great tutorials for the beginner sewer.

Second Life Makes Statement Look

After 8 long weeks I have a great makeover to share with everyone. This was a very special project because so much love went into every decision about what to do with this family heriloom. My friend, client, and fellow KD alum asked me to help her give her life to a chair she cherished. We did just about everything you could do to this chair without changing the shape. We reglued, refinished the wood, painted the back, polished the brass and reupholstered the cushion. It was worth every minute though! I just adore the finished project and it looks great in her home and matches her house perfectly.

Online DIY Upholstery Videos

I get asked by a lot of people where I learned to reupholster and refinish furniture. The number one thing that worked for me was just trying it. To be able to have the confidence to try a project I watched a lot of online videos. I read a lot books that included directions and photos but seeing someone do something step-by-step on video made me feel comfortable to try it by myself at home and from doing it I learned my own tips and tricks. I recently found some great videos about building and upholstering ottomans; this is my next project.

This Todd Oldham video is great but even the boring homemade videos are very helpful. You can type just about anything into YouTube and get various results of helpful videos. I can't even imagine living with the internet and technology- it's fast and free!!

Quick and Simple Art Display Project

We have a great collection of concert posters since that is Bryan's industry. We have a few framed but needed a more affordable and easy way to display a cluster of posters. for about $5 I was able to create this display from picture wire, picture hang tabs and shower curtain clips. It also only took about 5 minutes to create, my type of project!

How to Refinish a Dresser

I'll walk you through how I turned a thrift store dresser into a statement piece in my guest bedroom.

#1. Purchase (or if you already have move to step two) dresser you wish to refinish. I suggest inspecting all legs, drawers and sides to see how much work you will need to do. This piece had only minor scratches.

#2. Fill scratches and holes with wood filler. Wait and sand where you filled.
#3 Sand, I know many people skip this but it just takes a few minutes (20ish) and you won't regret it.

#4 Prime, I prefer a spray primer. It only costs about $3 and will help your paint job look professional.
#4 Let dry before painting. I choose a red paint to try to stay close to a color that would be similar to the period of the piece. Plus, I like a bold statement.
#5 Paint- I choose to paint with a 3" roller brush. I find it easier and you'll have less lines from a paint brushed finish. I gave it three coats before doing detail touch up.
#6 I choose to do a detail stencil on the top drawer. Once the red coat was dry I was able to wipe and place my stencil. I again used a sponge brush and gave it one layer. The trick to stencils is to not use too much paint or it will seep under and you won't get a clear finish. You will always need to paint over with a small detail brush.

I can't deny that I love a good bargain and a great thrift store find. I know some people are completely appalled to purchase something used, I think it's eco-friendly and most times the item needs a second life.

My Tips:
1. Ask what the sale days are, Goodwill is 50% of the entire store the last weekend of each month.
2. Notice pricetag colors, they rotate items by price tag colors and will post what color is one sale.
3. Be cautious of the dressing rooms, I have found the lighting is poor, they are sometimes gross and can turn you off from buying items. For me, if it's cheap enough I'll buy it and donate it back if it doesn't fit.
4. Look in the men's and women's section. I see that the clothes are misplaced or organized by the staff who may not know certain brands.
5. Look very closely for stains, rips, smells and anything 'off'.
6. Ask staff what you're looking for, they know the inventory best and may be able to point you directly at your item so you don't have to search.
7. Always test electronics in the store. Ask to plug them in and see if they work. Some stores check before putting merchandise out, most do not.
8. Know that there is typically a no return policy at thrift store.
9. Feel good about your purchase because most are charities and serve a needy purpose.
10. Try to look beyond the stuff for hidden gems and potential.
11. If you feel like the inventory has been picked over ask when they place most items on the floor.
12. Avoid the busy shopping times, like Saturday's if you don't like crowds.
13. Don't give up on thrift store the first time you go in and don't see anything, thrift storing is about the hunt!
14. Avoid thrift stores close to college campuses, they are over priced and picked over.

I agree that Twitter is not for everyone. I enjoy having my select group of people I follow (250) feeding me information that I find interesting, entertaining, useful or funny. I feel like I have more control of my experience in social media rather than with Facebook. Having an iphone has also increased the usability of twitter because the apps make it so easy to share a link, reply to a tweet or mention a friend or user account. Twitter is like anything, only as useful as what you get out of it.

Bring the Outdoors IN

Although most people are thinking about bringing indoors outside, with 100 degree heat I want to bring the outdoors in. I am interested in creating a feature wall inside my house. Since it is a stone exterior I believe it would tie in nicely. I found some great inspiration online. Interior stones can be used in any room. Please note that interior and exterior stones ARE different. You don't want stones that will break or dust inside your home.

Support Local Businesses

I always try to support local businesses if the quality and price are good. I have been terribly disappointed with Joann's lately. I think the sky opened up and directed me to a family owned foam and upholstery supply store. They are half the price of Joann's and twice the quality. I loved their vintage fabric selection, this was not reproduction.

My advice when reupholstering…

#1 Find the piece that you wish to recover. I recommend having the foam in good condition when first learning to reupholster. New foam is more advanced. Take the BEFORE photo.

#2 Order Fabric- be brave! I order online because I am limited in fabric store selections. Always check the width of the fabric you are ordering. Verify that the weight and durability of the fabric is what you are looking for. Samples are great if you are unsure but will delay your project if you are in a rush. I’m cheap, I don’t like to spend more than $12 a yard on upholstery fabric. Always order 1 extra yard, just in case.

#3 Remove existing fabric gently! The better and more carefully you remove the fabric the easier it will be to remember how to replace the fabric and a better template for cutting the new pieces. I recommend taking lots of in process shots to help you remember how it looked. If there are tricky corners or anything, take a photo. You’ll never regret taking too many photos. If there are more than 5 pieces to replace, I will do one section at a time so I don’t forget how it was done.

#4 Replace fabric. This is when you will get very excited about your project. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect the first time, you can always go back and tweak your work one piece at a time. Having a helper doesn’t hurt either if you have someone who likes you enough to hold pieces. I don’t put 1000 staples in on the first go. I do the minimal about of staples until I am positive that it’s perfect, then I will go back and add more staples.

#5 Decorative touches. I think adding something special to the piece is what will make all of the difference. Decorative nail heads, colorful trim, whatever you want. I will admit that I still cannot get an entire line of decorative nail heads perfectly straight. Practice makes perfect I guess.

#6 Take the AFTER photo and share your creation with everyone you know! Enjoy your piece!

Before and After Projects

First project is a tree jewelry stand that I received as a Christmas gift. It was fine, but now with several coats of pink paint it's a statement piece.

Second project, I purchased this chair on clearance from the Bearden Antique Mall by my house. It was a project that I immediately took to and wanted to work on. One sale now if you're interested.

Ms. Pac Man

Bryan and I received a 48-in-one arcade system as an engagement present from our parents. Not typical, but we're not. I grew up with a Ms. Pac Man machines and have taught Bryan a fraction of my skills to keep myself entertained.

We love the machine but I am guilty of destroying the black leather. First for using it as a painting stool and next for setting a hot iron on one. Guilty.

I used IKEA fabric that my mother-in-law bought for me from Atlanta. I think it's very playful and fun.

Upholstery Classes?

I am very disappointed with the lack of upholstery classes around the Southeast and probably most of the U.S. Many high schools taught upholstery as a workshop class, but with the downfall in public education we know that was one thing that has been cut. It also seems to have been cut or reduced from trade schools- a staple place to learn. There is one small class taught here in Knoxville at a small community school but the waiting list is so long (over a year) they won't even add any more students to the list. I have called mom and pop shops who claim to know, friends who have experience and still no luck in finding a real class or instructor.

Alternatives, I have found YouTube videos to be very helpful along with online searching about any issues I have while completing my projects. I have checked out plenty of upholstery books from the library but truly have found that experience is teaching me the most. Each project I become better and am proud to be self-taught.

I may go to Indiana or Texas for a weekend workshop to better enhance my knowledge. Anyone up for a road trip?

Online Fabric Tips

I know a lot of people are very timid about purchasing items online, I am too. But, when being so limited with selections (especially in Tennessee) I have to purchase many things online, fabric being crucial. Here are some of my tips when purchasing online.

Always opt to purhcase the sample before ordering

Check their return policy. Are returns allowed? Who pays shipping? Is there a restocking fee?

Check the pattern repeat specifics, I have thought things repeated how I envisioned them until it arrived. It they don't state the repeat, do request it.

Do they measure with a few extra inches? This is helpful in case you get a bad cut job or it has been unevenly cut.

You may want to check the color on multiple screens, my work ad hoem computers can vary.

Read the stores policy on shipping, some take weeks to even ship out to you.

If they website or anything seems fishy, it could be. If they don't have a contact number or contact email, don't order.

I prefer to use a creditcard with great buyer protection, this allows me to feel safer about my online purchases.

If a place opens up by your house called "Sips and Strokes" you better bet that you'll want to take your bff Ali for a Friday night. Yes, that is the name and we had fun with it. We also have a place called "Sprited Artwork" but the name isn't as fun. They are both places where you take a one night painting class while they encourage you to drink. I love the concept. Each night is a different painting. Ali and I were lucky to have a private lesson and of course she ended up knowing the instructor through a friend. Those Morristown people are very friendly.

I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to go back. My favorite part was mixing all of the colors, it made me want to finger paint. If you want to go to a class, call me! I'll go! I' really the worst painter ever and I doubt Bryan will let me hang anything up. Oh well, it's fun!

My Innocent Project

It all began with my donated, stained, but comfy office chair. Most of our office furniture comes in by donations. I snagged this great chair two years ago because I loved the shape but it turned out to have several stains on the seat but as long as I am sitting in the chair no one will know.

In researching furniture, I came along a Martha Stewart YouTube video of "Simply Spray" a fabric and upholstery spray paint. I was thrilled! For $20 I could spray my office chair a funky color and call it a makeover. Well..... that's how it all began.

When trying to order one can of the spray dye I came to find that they only sell in packs of three, this is one of the ways they get you. I ordered plum and a box arrived a week later. I opened it up to find red, not what I ordered. I also found they don't have a 1-800 number, turns out most companies should have one. I e-mailed and they allowed me to mail it back to then receive my correct order. Two weeks later I got my plum order.

I started my removing the nail heads, I thought this would take 30 minutes, about 4 hours later (days actually, I never have four hours) I finally had removed all of the nail heads. Yay! Ready to spray paint! I took it outside on my back porch and laid down a newspaper. I tried but the paint wouldn't come out, it was as though there wasn't any air in the can. I tried another can, nothing. Bryan, thinking I was pressing the button wrong, tried to assist. Also, no luck. Third can... no luck. The paint would randomly and forcefully splatter, not evenly spray. I tried to take a sponge and spread but it was useless. All cans were faulty. Again, back to the e-mail to the company. This time I attached the picture of what appears to be a murder scene in my once adored office chair. Also, the back porch is stained with plum dye (not fixed yet, that's another story). They did however send me three more cans, two weeks later and I had better luck. But, when it dried the fabric was stiff and uncomfortable and the dye was uneven.

I still wasn't any closer to giving my chair a new look. I took a deep breath and knew I was reupholstering my chair, not ready but up for the task. I also under estimated the time it would take to complete the project. I am guessing about ten hours overall, it's hard to know since it took me two weeks, I have little free time to devote to my projects and have several going at once. It was easier than I thought. I removed each piece as it was layered, took many photos of how the seams came together and used the fabric as templates for the new fabric. I am impressed with how it looks, although my nailheads could use some more attention to detail.

I know Bryan is thrilled for me to get it out of the living room, after more than a month.

I purchased the fabric a Zarin's Fabric in NYC. I love that place, not cheap but I love it anyway! I did re-stain the wood after my final pictures to cover up the scratches that exist. E-mail me if you want any ideas or for me to complete a project for you.

Patch the Elbows

I think that all things can inspire. When thinking about home design I like to pull from my fashion. I like unique, different, practical and comfy. I adore elbow patches! They send a statement of vintage, professional and fashionable. I think it would be great to design a lounge chair with elbow patches. I mocked up what it might look like and I think it's fun! I also couldn't find any chairs on the market with the look I designed.

Window Bench Project

My second project in my self taught upholstery class is a $20 bench from an antique shop. I liked it because it was simple and affordable. My favorite part of the project was that as I began removing the fabric the layers of fabric just kept appearing. I reupholstered in fabric I purchased years ago, and I sanded and darkened the wood with a deep chocolate stain.

FABRIC

Here in Knoxville, we are very limited in the fabric department. We have a great quilt fabric shop, bur not too helpful for thick upholstery fabric. Mill Agent is another option but options are very small, expensive and most need to be custom ordered in large qualities. So, when Bryan picked NYC for his birthday I knew it meant I could finally get some great fabric. We headed downtown, close to Chinatown to Zarin Fabrics, and I didn't pick it because she is one of the housewives of NYC ( that was just a bonus).

I loved the vibe, very casual New York. No fus, no fancy showroom and no overpriced fabric. The rolls and rolls were very overwhelming. I managed to select three fabrics and received great customer service.

I look forward to buying more at my next visit.

First Project

My $6 Goodwill Chairs were great to practice on. I learned a lot! I learned not to sand in the living room and to always wear a mask. It felt like I had swallowed bleach from the chemicals. Also, there was a lot of dead bugs in the chair and in the cushion that probably would have been better to remove while outside the house. I think I also didn't do enough sanding. I felt like everything that could go wrong did, which was great to learn from. Paint wouldn't stick because it was too cold outside, screws broke while taking out, seat wood was moldy, cushion foam was too small, two spray cans were not enough.... etc.

I am however pleased with the results from the before to the after.

We are finally crossing off the master bedroom on our to do list. We do still need some art work but we anticipate to collect those things over time. It took a little while to be inspired and really tune into what we envisioned for our master bedroom. We purchased a king size bed and memory foam bed. We purchased all new linens, one large dresser, two side tables, a floor length mirror and painted the walls, ceiling and did a stencil treatment behind the bed. I feel so relaxed and calm every night and morning when I enter our bedroom.

We love our historic home, you can't put a price on the charm and character. Actually, you can price out how much historic windows will cost you. We received our first utility bill and died, six times what we paid in our loft. It appears that our vintage and original windows suck out our expensive heat and are freezing us out.

What is your thoughts on historic windows? I love the charm and worry about resale. Could we replace them? Purchase shutters? Create heavy duty curtains?

My Online Shopping Advice

-Always have a ruler or tape measure handy. Even though you think you know what 28.5 inches looks like it is always best to measure while on the computer to get a visual. I always do this and it saves me from overestimating sizes.

-Understand that colors on your computer may be different in person. I often have been looking for the perfect item in a perfect shade of yellow, and online you really risk colors. All screens alter the color, along with how the item was photographed.

-Don’t forget to check return policy. Not that the amount of time you have to return the item, check how it needs to be repackaged. A lot of times it needs to be returned in the same box it was shipped in. Some companies also mail to you return address labels, keep these handy if you do change your mind about your purchase. Also, check if you pay shipping and restocking fee or if it’s free. Zappos.com has the best return policy of any store I’ve seen online.

-Check online coupons. Before checking out, open up another window and go to www.retailmenot.com and type in where you are shopping. It will then generate all online coupons associated with that website. It’s great!

-Shop with a protected payment option. Paypal and Amex protect most of your online shopping for greater security against fraudulent stores and sellers.

-Subscribe to online shop e-mails. I get tons of daily e-mails of coupons and limited sales to those who are subscribed; it’s very helpful but also probably makes me buy more than I should.
-Join 1-day shopping sites. The new thing is one day sales up to 80% of retail prices of designer brands like BCBG, Prada, Louis Vuitton, etc. Sites are: www.hautelook.com, www.ruelala.com, www.beyondtherack.com, and www.ideeli.com are my favorite although there are plenty more.

Tis the Season

When moving to Knoxville I was a bit disappointed at the lack of homes that decorate with Christmas lights. I think it is also a new trend to do less, greener yes, but I still enjoy a house with 100,000,000 strands of lights on it. One of my favorite traditions is driving around listening to Christmas music, in pajamas, drinking hot cocoa and looking at the lights. I do have to stay that in Knoxville you can see awesome cars like the truck pictured here, one point Knoxville. Looks likes this topic is a tie.

Design Inspiration from INDIGO HOTEL in Asheville, NC

I spent Halloween weekend in Asheville, NC for Moogfest, an awesome new music festival. We stayed at the Hotel Indigo and were able to get a private peak at the penthouse condos for sale, which I totally wanted to buy. If you picture my before pictures, insert in the beutiful colors and furniture from the hotel and this is what my vision is for our home. I would never leave home.

Bryan and I have our work cut out for us. We are moving in 11 days! WOW! We are packing like crazy. I wanted to post the BEFORE pictures because after we get in there will be many AFTERS. For those who saw our downtown loft, we love color and we love to decorate. We need to start off with the front steps, a new roof, painting, and a new garage/party deck. Kicthen and bathrooms are on the list but may take a little longer to do. I will be posting lots of decor idea pictures for many opinions.

New Restaurant- Night Owl

Last night, Bryan and I went to Night Owl restaurant for the first time. I hated to admit that there is a restaurant 1 block away from my door that we hadn’t tried. We went in with a blank slate because we had heard mixed reviews. I really enjoyed it, we had excellent customer service and I value good customer service. The chef came out several times to check on guests. The food was delicious! I ordered the veggie burger and Bryan the burger. My veggie burger had sweet potatoes and walnuts in the patty which I had never tried before. I will never make another veggie burger with walnuts now, it gave it great texture. The waffle fries were also delicious. My two cons were the prices were a bit high, I’m cheap and also they don’t serve beer or wine. You can however, go across the street to Aisle Nine and bring in a six pack which we did. Overall, I want to go back and try another item. I hope the menu changes with the seasons.

90 Day Health and Fitness Challenge

I am so into my work's 90 day staff incentive health and fitness challenge! It's a point challenge with raffle tickets given at every 100 points you earn and a grand prize dinner if you get 200 points per month for 3 months. We have become pretty competitive at work. We can get points if we walk 10,000 steps per day (recommended for beginning health benefits from walking) attending classes, tracking our calories and bringing in a vegetable tray (without dip). I am only doing the pedometer challenge right now but I also plan to attend some classes. I really want to win the raffle prizes. We have over twenty staff members participating and I think I'm trailing in 4th place.

I never knew it would be so hard to get in my 10,000 steps a day. On days that I walk to work, walk home for lunch and talk the dog out for leisurely walks 10,000 steps is easy. Days that I drive to work and have a lot of meetings 10,000 it a large stretch, I have done 10,000+ each day but sometimes I'm walking around the house before going to bed.

Yes Julia, I have slacked on my blog. I needed your push to get me back into the swing of things. Things have certainly changed from this time last year when I was over my head in wedding blogs. Now, I am soaked into all things home design, being a new vegetarian and trying to figure out what 'wife' means. I think my blog may be going a new direction, I don't feel comfortable enough to talk weddings, I feel so removed. Hope that's okay with everyone :)

Wedding Gift Ideas

We received some very thoughtful and personalized gifts for our wedding. I wanted to share three with you. #1- Frame the invitation they sent you. Julia did this for us (she also designed the invitations) but it was so meaningful to us.
#2 Cookbook with ingredients. Kirby and Christina were so creative in purchasing a cookbook (best Martha Stewart cookbook) and then they picked out a recipe (stuffed artichokes) and purchased ingredients from a great farmers market in NYC. It was so creative, special and fun! I'm going to use this idea!
#3 Custom Couple Print. Michelle (best friend and rockstar day of wedding planner) went above in beyond by hiring an artist (Etsy.com) to create a custom picture of us and had it framed to fit our decor. She didn't plan it but this outfit in the print I bought on our engagement trip in Greece, so meaningful to us. Even Mika's collar is special because that was her first collar. It is a great gift for an occasion.

Children were absolutely invited to our wedding. We set up a children's table with personalized activity books. It appears though they had the most fun turning corn hole into a whole new game and showing the other guests how to use the photobooth.

Fabulous Flowers

Flowers are truly not my thing. I know nothing about them and had to take a crash course to have flowers at the wedding. I originally didn't want any including bouquets but I was out voted and glad because they were a nice touch. The flowers were very simple and only used for the ceremony, bridal party and cake. My men's flowers were billy balls, I found them on a blog and had to have them. The girls bouquets were rananculus and peonies. I made fabric flowers for the reception chairs and tables. I found my florist from a friend, she does it as a side job and grew all of the flowers specifically for the wedding, all organic. To save on cost on flowers, we spaced flowers between hanging glass globes that were made by the mother's mosaic group. They were also used at my sister's wedding and on their way to another wedding. I am so pleased they will be used again. I had the idea from a wedding blog and they truly ran with it.

My Good Lookin' Man

We went super affordable to look good for the wedding. My groom and groomsmen bought suits from Macy's on clearance for $185. More affordable then renting and they can wear it again and again. We went with a lightweight texture since it was so hot outside. The ties were purchased for $15 on ties-neckties.com and they each wore simple white button ups and black shoes. Their socks were argyle, also from Macy's. I think they look very hot!

The Big Reveal of The Dress

I am very happy to finally be able to post photos of my dress on my blog. It was top secret for 15 months, I have never kept a secret from Bryan. I did though, he said he didn't picture my dress at all. He thought I would be a strapless, but that to me would have been too predictable. My dress is a Judd Waddell, purchased from Lori's Bridal in Atlanta. Sorry, but I will not be selling it. I have become too attached to it.

I can honestly say that I tried on hundreds of dresses, I had almost given up on finding the perfect dress. I was torn between two dresses, a Jim Hjelm and a Mikaella dress but they didn't give me the "I want to get married in this dress feeling" and I really almost gave up. My final attempt and literally final dress gave me the feeling I was waiting for, I put it on and started crying and knew it was my wedding dress. I found a website that will give you a 30-day rain forecast. I have no idea how accurate it is. The yellow means little or no rain, gray means some chance of rain and black (which I don't want) is good chance rain. I am hoping more yellow bars will be added as I patiently check the weather everyday until the wedding.

Wedding To Do List

The wedding to do list has been a mile long and I finally got it to thirty items. As I am completing items though more items are being added to the list. I would love to have it down to ten items. I have taken the day off of work tomorrow and can hopefully cross some things off the list with 8 hours dedicated to wedding stuff. We still have some gifts to get, the wedding welcome bags, programs, directional items, dance lessons, scuba diving certification, honeymoon shopping, tissue balls, fabric flowers, napkin flower rings, and many more items.
